Handprint Keepsake

Materials:

  1. 1 1/4 cups of baking soda
  2. 3/4 cup of cornstarch
  3. 3/4 cup of water
  4. Parchment or wax paper
  5. Rolling pin or flat object such as a plate
  6. Straw
  7. Small paintbrush & paint
  8. Ribbon

Directions:

  1. To make the clay, place baking soda, cornstarch, and water in a pot and heat on medium while stirring occasionally. You will know it's done when it resembles mashed potatoes.
  2. Once it's finished, remove the clay from the pot and place it in a bowl covered with a damp cloth to cool.
  3. Put the parchment or wax paper on your counter as the clay will be soft and can get stuck on your kitchen tools.
  4. Create a round of clay that is about 1 centimeter to 1.5 centimeters thick and large enough to fit your child's hand.
  5. Help your child center his or her hand on the clay circle and press it down firmly.
  6. When your handprint is as you want it to be, use a straw to create the two holes that will later be used for hanging the keepsake.
  7. Then, let the keepsake dry for a full 24 hours.
  8. After the keepsake is completely dry, the kids are free to paint or decorate it however they would like.
  9. Then all you have to do is thread the ribbon through the holes and tie the ends together.
